The Russian invasion of Ukraine has unleashed human suffering on a scale beyond what many of us believed was still possible in the 21st Century.
Every day we bear is witness to the deaths of innocent civilians, the destruction of essential infrastructure, and displacement of millions of people within Ukraine and beyond. 2 million people in Ukraine have been uprooted from their homes, on top of the almost 3 million who have fled to neighboring countries. The majority of those on the move are women and children, who are always most at risk of exploitation and abuse during crises.
Within Ukraine, people are enduring the dangers of life under siege, trying to cope without adequate water, heat and electricity. Frigid winter temperatures make conditions for those seeking shelter in basements and subway stations even more unbearable. Roads and bridges made impassible by bombs and shelling are preventing access to food and other basic necessities. Tens of thousands of women will give birth in the coming months in Ukraine—many of them without access to critical maternal health care if the crisis continues to shut down essential services. Brutal Russian attacks continue in all parts of the country of 44 million people.
It has been gut-wrenching for me, especially as a Croatian-American who witnessed the war of the 1990’s, to stand by and watch, yet it feels critically important to bear witness and help in any way I can. As artists we have an obligation to use our craft to speak out. I am working on a large painting to be auctioned and published as a limited edition print and poster - all of the proceeds will go to support the displaced people of Ukraine. In order to respond quickly, I created a series of NFTs.
Pixels for Ukraine is a series of NFTs depicting people from rallies around the world, protests in support of peace in Ukraine and against Russian unprovoked aggression. Originals are in watercolor. To inquire about purchasing originals, please, contact the studio.
100 % of the proceeds from this collection will go to relief efforts for refugees from Ukraine through the IRC, Unicef, Lifting Hands and Doctors Without Borders.
