1.proposal
My proposal is to create a body of work based on our agreement, with the possibility of finalizing specific details on-site shortly before the exhibit. This collection will capture the essence of my recent journey, serving as an homage to the land, its people, the deep reverence for the kind monarchy, and the enduring spirit of Bhutan. I will draw on my sketchbook and photographs for reference and very much look forward to collaborating with you on the themes, ideas and possibilities for the exhibit.
Exhibition Proposal: Honoring the 4th King of Bhutan on His 70th Birthday
Title: Land of the Thunder Dragon: A Tribute in Oil and Pastel
Concept Overview: I’ve started with three concept ideas: Echoes of a Kingdom: A Tribute to the 4th King of Bhutan, In Bhutan, the Land is the Star and Elevated Lives: Portraits of Bhutan in Harmony. For detailed descriptions of concept options click the concepts link.
This exhibition will feature a collection of oil and pastel paintings that celebrate Bhutan's profound beauty and cultural heritage in honor of the 4th King of Bhutan on his 70th birthday. The body of work, inspired by the sacred landscapes and daily life observed during a recent meaningful visit to Bhutan, aims to reflect the spirit of environmental preservation, cultural richness, and spiritual depth cherished by His Majesty.
Artistic Vision:
The exhibition would consist of three distinct series:
His Majesty: One or two portraits capturing His Majesty’s spirit and compassion
Landscapes: Six to eight large oil paintings depicting Bhutan’s breathtaking natural landscapes. These scenes will capture the country’s dramatic mountains, serene valleys, and mist-covered forests, with an emphasis on the harmony between the land and the Bhutanese way of life. Small figures, delicately rendered, may inhabit some of these scenes, illustrating the deep connection between the people and their environment.
Still Life: Two to four intimate still life compositions portraying objects from Bhutanese daily and spiritual life, such as prayer wheels, ritual offerings, and traditional crafts. These pieces will echo themes of reverence and mindfulness.
Objective and Significance:
The exhibition seeks to honor the 4th King’s legacy of environmental and cultural preservation by portraying the sacred essence of Bhutan's landscapes and the heartfelt warmth of its people. It is a tribute to His Majesty’s vision for a harmonious and spiritually vibrant Bhutan.
Target Audience:
The exhibition will be curated for both local Bhutanese audiences and international visitors, inviting contemplation and appreciation of Bhutan’s unique heritage and the King’s enduring influence.
Proposed Venue and Duration:
Ideally hosted in a cultural or art center in Bhutan, the exhibition would run for one to two months, allowing for community engagement, workshops, and discussions that align with the themes of the artwork.
