Snow Day Skate
Snow Day Skate
pastel on sanded paper, 30” X 22”
One of the joys of Winter for me is ice skating. Wollman Skating Rink in New York City’s Central Park is one of my favorite places to skate. It is an equal opportunity rink - the beginners and semi-pros glide, stumble, crash skid, twirl and jump in one synchronous mass of humanity. It is a joyful and beautiful scene surrounded by the old beauties of Central Park South glimpsed through the lace of the majestic trees and vines at the edges of the rink. On a snowy day there is that extra special element of magic added. This place provides much inspiration for my work. This piece is second in a series of twelve.
I painted this painting on thick paper prepared with sanded medium that I tinted blue. It gave me the opportunity to use the ground layer and its strokes to add texture to the piece. It is the first painting in the series of twelve.
