The Art of Protest

On January 21st 2017, three generations of our family traveled to Washington D.C. to join the Women’s March on Washington. That was, as it turns out, only the beginning. I came home and made some sketches, as I often do after a trip. I was completely taken by the creativity, political instinct, and boldness of the countless hand-made protest signs, and wanted to capture them in some way for posterity. I posted a small sketch from the march in D.C. on my Instagram, and quickly received requests for a...

Sketchbook from a Book Tour

A Europe Tour in Sketches Recently a friend visited my studio while I was attempting to archive my sketchbooks. There were strewn about the studio and we both got lost in colors and images of moments long forgotten, journeys to exotic lands and cities, and snippets of memories. I am sharing one such colorful sketchbook here in its entirety. It documents my travels with my friend, author Elizabeth Mattis Namgyel, as she spoke about her first book, The Power of an Open Question. If you wish to have a...

Homage to Paris

On the evening of 13 November 2015, a series of coordinated terrorist attacks occurred in Paris and its northern suburb, Saint-Denis. Beginning at 21:20 CET, three suicide bombers struck near the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, followed by suicide bombings and mass shootings at cafés, restaurants and a music venue in central Paris. It is heartbreaking to see this violence and destruction in the city beloved by so many around the world. This painting is inspired by a desire to express appreciation for Paris and deep sorrow for the events that killed so many in one evening there. “Homage to Paris”,...

Kafana

“Dinner in East Village” (Kafana), pastel on paper, 22″ X 30″, at B. Deemer Gallery in Louisville, KY On an uncharacteristically balmy New York City evening in November, mu husband and I strolled to a small Serbian/Croatian restaurant in East Village.  Entering from a slightly ready street into this bit of warmth and South-European atmosphere was magical. At least half a dozen languages trickled into our ears and a mix of families and young couples, elders and dudes were in full swing of enjoyment of food and company. No-nonsense waitresses...

Breakfast at the Bridge of Sighs

Breakfast at the Bridge of Sighs, pastel on paper 41″ X 26″, pastel on paper, at B. Deemer Gallery in Louisville, KY Last year we visited Venice, Italy. That may sound like an exotic and faraway place but in truth it is a mere 2 hour drive from my childhood summer home where I still spend significant amounts of time. Some friends who couldn’t use their hotel reservation gave it to us and we need up staying in a part of town where I had beer before stayed, assuming that...
